Living in the Eixample: Mid-Term Rentals, Prices and Neighbourhood Life
- Barcelona
Updated October 2026 · 8 min read
The Eixample is where most multi-month rentals in Barcelona happen, and for good reason: it concentrates transport, services, offices and some of the city's best furnished apartments. But "Eixample" covers very different areas. This guide explains what daily life is like, how its sub-districts differ and what to check before you sign a seasonal rental.

What the Eixample is like
It's the 19th-century extension of the city: square blocks with chamfered corners, wide streets and a grid that's easy to remember. Carrer de Balmes splits it into two halves: the Dreta (right, towards the sea) and the Esquerra (left, towards Sants), and it contains several neighbourhoods with their own identity.
The Eixample zone by zone
Dreta de l'Eixample
The most elegant part: Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló, luxury shops and big-company offices. It's also the priciest. It works well for executives and anyone who wants to be a few steps from everything, though it has more traffic and tourists.
Esquerra de l'Eixample
More residential and more neighbourhood-like: markets, long-standing bars and local shops. Prices are a bit lower than in the Dreta and evenings are calmer.
Sant Antoni
With its renovated market and Carrer del Parlament lined with terraces, this is the youngest and most fashionable corner of the Eixample, with a great choice of cafés and restaurants. An excellent option for remote-work stays.
Sagrada Família and Fort Pienc
Two calmer, more family-oriented areas. The first has tourists right around the basilica but residential streets a few minutes away; the second is a district of apartment blocks and parks, very practical and well connected.
Daily life
Transport. Several metro lines cross the Eixample, complemented by buses and Rodalies stations. For most city journeys you won't need a car. If you arrive from the airport, the Aerobús drops you at Plaça Catalunya, right next to the area.
Shopping. Supermarkets from several chains, municipal markets and specialist shops sit within five minutes' walk of almost any doorway.
Remote work. There are coworking spaces and cafés with good wifi throughout; it's one of the most practical areas for people who work from home.
Health. Pharmacies and medical centres are easy to find. If you're settling for a few months, there's more on paperwork and healthcare in our guide to moving to Barcelona.
How much a mid-term rental costs in the Eixample
Price depends on the area, size, floor and condition of the flat. In general:
| Area | Price level | Typical profile |
|---|---|---|
| Dreta de l'Eixample | High | Executives, corporate stays |
| Esquerra de l'Eixample | Medium-high | Professionals, couples |
| Sant Antoni | Medium-high | Digital nomads, young people |
| Sagrada Família / Fort Pienc | Medium | Families, longer stays |
Seasonal rentals usually cost more per month than a standard residential let, because they include furniture, utilities and flexibility. Always compare what's covered by the rent (electricity, water, internet, cleaning) and not just the monthly figure. For the underlying differences, see the complete guide to mid-term rentals in Barcelona.

Noise, light and orientation: what photos don't show
The Eixample has plenty of bright flats, but there are important differences:
- Outer vs. inner street. The avenues (Gran Via, Aragó, Diagonal) are noisier. If you sleep lightly, choose a side street or an inner courtyard.
- Floor. Higher floors get more light and less street noise; on the ground floor you'll notice the neighbourhood more.
- Lift. Many Modernista buildings have one, but not all. Confirm before booking.
- Terraces and balconies. Highly sought-after in summer; ask about orientation.
- Heating and cooling. Check heating and air conditioning for the season of your stay.
Who the Eixample suits (and who it doesn't)
A good fit if:
- You need to move around the city often without a car.
- You want every service close at hand.
- You travel for work or work remotely.
- It's your first season in Barcelona and you want a safe location.
You may prefer another area if:
- You want a village feel with small squares (look at Gràcia).
- You want the sea on your doorstep (look at Poblenou).
- Your priority is the lowest possible price (look at Sants).
You'll find the full comparison in our mid-term rental guide by neighbourhood.
